Your first-session goal

Do not try to solve the whole build system in the opening hours. Your useful first goal is smaller: learn one repeatable Emma-and-Koo combat loop, create a clean settings baseline, and spend only after you understand what the upgrade changes.

The game is built around two partners with different jobs. Emma handles the immediate sword action. A successful Just Guard earns points for Koo, whose commands provide the tactical half of the loop. Opening Koo's command menu slows time, so it is also your chance to stop reacting and make a deliberate choice.

Use this route for a spoiler-light first session.

1. Set a baseline before the first hard fight

On PC, confirm resolution, display mode, frame-rate behavior, upscaler choice, input device, and camera sensitivity before changing many graphics settings. The corrected launch specification assumes 16 GB of memory, an SSD, and an upscaler for both published targets. If your machine is near the minimum target, begin conservatively and keep a short note of what you changed.

On any platform, choose the difficulty that gives you enough attempts to learn the parry-and-command rhythm. There are three difficulty choices, but this Wiki does not publish invented damage or timing multipliers. Use the decision guide in Difficulty & Accessibility if you are unsure.

2. Learn the smallest combat loop

Practice this sequence against an enemy whose wind-up you can read:

  1. Hold position long enough to recognize one attack cue.
  2. Attempt the Just Guard with Emma instead of starting a long attack string.
  3. Notice the resource earned for Koo after a successful parry.
  4. Open Koo's command menu and choose a useful response while time is slowed.
  5. Reposition before repeating the sequence.

The lesson is not “parry everything.” It is “connect defense to a planned Koo action.” If you spend the earned resource immediately without reading the situation, you have learned only half of the system. The Combat, Parry & Koo Commands page explains how to make that decision repeatable without pretending there is one universal frame window.

3. Keep hunger and healing connected

Natural recovery depends on the hunger gauge not being empty. Before a long route or repeated encounter practice, check hunger and carry a meal plan instead of treating missing recovery as a difficulty problem.

When you return to the Cleanse Walker, speak with Kagura, check available ingredients or recipes, and choose a meal for the next task. Food can support HP, Attack, or Defense, so keep the same meal while testing another change. Healing, Hunger & Cooking turns the field-to-meal loop into a short checklist.

4. Read Koo outside the command menu

Koo can guide objectives with a visible pheromone trail, bark when something nearby deserves attention, and bring items to Emma. Stop where the signal happens and scan elevation changes before widening the search. Emma's hair actions can reach jump points, create a temporary platform, raise her vertically, or turn height into a falling assassination.

At the Walker, pet, treat, and clean Koo. Rapport can expand his skill slots, so care is part of combat preparation rather than a cosmetic break. Continue with Traversal, Koo Scent & Exploration and Koo Rapport, Care & Skill Slots when those systems first appear.

5. Treat early upgrades as questions

Emma and Koo have separate progression tracks. Emma's side includes Blade Arts and equipment such as weapons and Spirit Stones. Koo's side includes Bloom Arts, commands, and Koo Charms. The game supports ranged, stealth-oriented, and aggressive loadout directions, but that does not make any launch-week “best build” universally correct.

Before buying or upgrading a node, ask:

  • Does this improve the action I already use, or introduce a new action I will practice?
  • Does it belong to Emma's immediate sword plan or Koo's command plan?
  • Can I describe when it triggers without guessing?
  • Am I upgrading because the effect helps my current problem, or because a tier list says so?

If a node's exact value or prerequisite is not visible in your current game version, do not plan around a number copied from a pre-launch tool. The Skill Trees & Bloom Arts and Weapons, Koo Charms & Spirit Stones pages give you the accurate family map while exact rows remain incomplete.

6. Use the first milestones as orientation

Several achievement conditions point to basic actions you can use as orientation without revealing story outcomes:

Early milestone What it teaches
First Fire Find and use your first campsite.
Place of Return Find and use your first shrine.
Blight-Touched Enhance an attribute for the first time.
Snack Time Feed Koo a treat for the first time.
Entangled Entangle an enemy with Koo for the first time.

These are not a mandatory order. They are a compact checklist of systems the game expects you to notice. The searchable All 46 Achievements database keeps story entries hidden until you choose to reveal them.

A clean end-of-session check

Before you stop, you should be able to answer five questions:

  • Which attack cue can I parry reliably?
  • Which Koo command do I choose after that parry, and why?
  • Which settings did I change from the baseline?
  • Is hunger active, and what meal is supporting the next task?
  • Which Koo field signal or care action did I learn to recognize?
  • Which upgrade changed an action I actually use?
  • Which campsite or shrine will I return to next?

If you cannot answer one, that is your next task. It is more useful than restarting for a theoretical build.

Avoid these opening-hour traps

Changing every PC setting at once. You lose the ability to tell which change helped. Use the PC Performance & Settings Troubleshooting workflow one variable at a time.

Assuming every displayed prompt is universal. The PC version recommends a gamepad and has full controller support, but your device, glyph set, remapping, and Steam Input path can still differ. Use Controls & Input Troubleshooting to isolate the device layer.

Following exact item or boss claims without a version. This Wiki currently publishes no exact item-stat table, drop route, boss weakness, or complete map. Those gaps are deliberate. A blank claim is safer than a confident wrong one.

Your first hours are successful when movement, recovery, Emma's action, and Koo's command feel like one repeatable route—not when your inventory resembles somebody else's endgame screenshot.
